Surname Project

The Massachusetts Society of Genealogists, Inc. (MSOG) is made up of individuals and families interested in performing genealogical research and family history to trace our ancestors and connect them into ‘family trees’ for various purposes and often to ‘tell their stories.’ Sometimes the most progress is made when we come across other living members of our family and information is exchanged. Our research can be a great deal easier by finding other researchers who already have information about our mutual families.

For years we have advertised our Society as "Friends Helping Friends" because we have each been helped by others along this journey. Eventually we found that we had information where we could provide help to others researching the same SURNAMES, LOCATIONS, and/or TIME-FRAMES on which we had or were currently working.

To this end a SURNAME PROJECT was started many years ago and is now being reviewed and updated. The project is intended to connect people who are looking for information with those who may have information to share. A great way to expand our research is by posting our surnames in registries and websites to increase chances of data sharing among fellow researchers.

We are always looking for ways to help members gain more from the benefits of being a MSOG member.  The Surname List is one such benefit.  Now that we have a new website, this is a great time to expand this valuable resource.  MSOG members will be able to enter surnames, locations and timeframe information.  Visitors to the site, who may be researching the same surname, will be able to contact the MSOG member who posted his or her information to the Surname List.  Perhaps the missing cousin you have not yet met will contact you and help solve that "brick wall" you have been struggling with for years.

NOTE: This project is NOT intended for the purpose of having another individual do your research.  It is, however, meant for your participation increases the likelihood of an information exchange taking place.

To submit your information to the Surname List follow these two easy steps.

  1. Check to make sure you are a current member of MSOG.  You will need your membership number to register your surname information.
  2. Fill in the form located on our website, www.massachusettssocietyofgenealogists.org with three or four of the most important names you are researching or with names where you need assistance affectionately known as "brick walls."

The Surname List will be updated annually.  In addition, if you change your e-mail address, please be sure to notify your Chapter’s Membership person so information can be kept up-to-date. Invalid e-mail addresses will result in your Surnames being removed.

For your convenience, Surname List forms will also be available at chapter meetings.
